Open Book Management
The common sense way to run your business

Frequently asked questions regarding open book management.

Isn't this just another management fad?
Yes and no. Yes, the language and terminology have experienced a revival of late inside companies. However, there's nothing new about managing from financial statements. The most successful companies in the world have done it for a long, long, long time. Accounting is the financial language of business and OBM focuses intensely on teaching that language to employees so everyone can communicate effectively.

What makes Axiom's system different?
Implementation of OBM takes a while because it requires winning over employees and convincing them that everyone will be playing by the same set of rules. Our system is based on incremental improvement and education over many weeks. It's not a quick fix. It takes time and we take the time to make sure you understand how the system will fit at your company.

Can I buy the materials for self study?
No, at this time we don't offer the curriculum for self study. This is primarily because a large part of the learning is done through coaching business owners in how to adapt OBM to their specific business. If you want to try OBM on your own there is a lot of literature on the subject to help you. But if you want to get it working in your company Axiom's program is the fastest, surest way to start managing more effectively.

Can this really work for MY company?
It ultimately depends on you. We can tell you from experience that it's not easy. Business owners and managers have a hard time letting go of information. In an OBM culture employees become knowledgable enough to start thinking for themselves. This is great if you are striving for a company of employees that thinks and acts like owners. It can be scary if you're an insecure business owner trying to hide things or put up a false front. So, YES, it can work for your company. You just have to be willing to change for the better.

How long does it take?
Our program lasts 13 weeks. This will give you an overview of OBM and an action plan for getting started in your business. Companies often see improvements within a month, but it can take up to a year and half to get OBM fully implemented and running as a weekly management tool.

Do you wish your employees would act more like business owners?

Do you wish there was a more comprehensive way to manage your company?

Is your business in need of a turnaround?

If you answered yes to any of these questions you need to be in enrolled in Axiom's Open Book Management course. During this 13 week program you will work through a proven framework for understanding OBM and applying it to your business. At the end of week 13 you will have a clear road map toward implementation and a set of realistic goals for turning your company into an organization that thinks and acts as an owner rather than an employee.

Seventeen years ago Jack Stack and John Case brought the concepts (or at least the terminology) of Open Book Management to business owners. Today, some of its message has been lost amid a sea of management fads. But we've seen it work and at Axiom we want to do more to bring it out into the open as the common sense way to run your business.

Just imagine..

Your EMPLOYEES plan the year's sales forecast, gross profit targets, and overhead budget while you provide strategic direction and feedback.

You hold your direct reports accountable on a weekly basis for their progress in meeting financial goals by building an income statement in real time at each meeting.

You can GUARANTEE that the money is available to pay your employees large incentive bonuses (10-20%) if they meet the business-wide targets.

Each year EVERYONE in the company focuses on two, hand picked strategic goals without losing sight of profitability and financial health.

These are all direct outcomes of OBM. However, this is just the beginning of what you can expect when employees start acting like owners. Individualized Open Book Management training with up to three participants from your company is $3,000. The program runs 13 weeks and each session lasts approximately an hour and a half.

Group sessions are also available from time to time and allow you to discuss concepts and application with two other fellow business owners. Due to the intense nature of the subject matter we attempt to limit groups to three participants and one facilitator. Group pricing is $2,000 per participant and uses the same curriculum as the individualized track. If you are interested in group sessions please contact the office and we will put you on the waiting list.
